Overview

Combine a memorable flight between Punta Arenas, Chile and King George Island, the largest in the South Shetlands archipelago, with an expedition cruise to cross the legendary Antarctic Circle. A great way to explore the highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula as you head to the extreme latitudes of the far south.

Highlights

  • Marvel at the White Continent's breathtaking scenery
  • Experience thrilling Zodiac cruises and shore landings
  • Witness penguin colonies active with playful chicks
  • Enjoy whale watching - it's at its best in February
  • Enchance your cruise with optional adventure options

Choosing to fly either one-way or in both directions between Chile and Antarctica offers a different perspective and saves time at sea crossing the notorious Drake Passage. You can instead focus on enjoying a leisurely cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula's spectacular west coast, pushing south across the Antarctic Circle with plenty of time available to stop and explore on foot, by zodiac, kayak or even snorkelling and scuba-diving!

Venturing far south beyond 66°33”, across the Antarctic Circle, reveals a frozen region of brooding mountain ranges, massive blue icebergs and waterways taut with fast ice. Plentiful krill attracts the continent's greatest variety and concentration of wildlife, including orcas, leopard seals, fur seals, penguins and snow petrels.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Embarkation in Ushuaia
Board your ship in Ushuaia this afternoon and set sail down the Beagle Channel.
Day 2: Drake Passage
Cross the Drake Passage, accompanied by albatross, petrels, fulmars and prions. The on-board polar experts will speak about Antarctica's unique wildlife and history and prepare you for landings with environmental and Zodiac briefings.
Day 3: South Shetland Islands
Spirits soar as air and water temperatures fall, marking the crossing of the Antarctic Convergence. All eyes are peeled for the first iceberg, the first penguin and the first glimpse of land, the mercurial sea stacks outlying the South Shetland Islands. If conditions allow, you will go ashore this afternoon.
Days 4-9: Antarctic Peninsula
Explore the Peninsula's west coast, where you can view the frenzied activities of penguin parents and chicks, watch for imperial cormorant chicks bravely making their first flights, Zodiac cruise amongst icebergs, admire basking Weddell and leopard seals and revel in the unparalleled beauty of vast Antarctic landscape. Land on wildlife-rich offshore islands and on the Antarctic mainland. Continue south and celebrate in style as you cross the Antarctic Circle, keeping your eyes peeled for orcas, humpbacks and minke whales as you start to make your way north again.
Day 10: King George Island - Punta Arenas
Returning to the South Shetland Islands, disembark at mountainous King George Island where you will board a charter flight back to Punta Arenas. On arrival in Punta Arenas, transfer to a your hotel for a final night with the group.
Day 11: Punta Arenas
Enjoy breakfast with your fellow expeditioners in the hotel before saying your farewells and departing.
Notes
  • Some alternative itineraries include a flight in both directions between Punta Arenas and King George Island.
  • Please note that all voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!

Scott Expedition Photos

Take a glimpse into history as two polar ships are transformed into exclusive floating galleries, with photographs from Scott’s final Antarctic expedition to be exhibited at sea for the first time.

Until March 2018 guests on board the Akademik Sergey Vavilov and Akademik Ioffe can view limited edition platinum prints of the iconic photographs taken by Herbert Ponting during Captain Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13.

The photographs are one of the most famous, beautiful and compelling visual records in the history of exploration. Ponting documented all facets of Scott’s expedition, including photographs of the men, their ship (the Terra Nova), daily life in their hut at Cape Evans, scientific research, Antarctic wildlife and the frozen landscapes of Ross Island.

Handmade from Ponting’s original glass plate negatives, now owned and conserved by the Scott Polar Research Institute, the prints were produced using the platinum printing process, a photographic technique first introduced in the19th century.

Passengers will have the opportunity to buy the limited edition prints during their voyage, with half of the proceeds going to the Scott Polar Research Institute to contribute to its environmental research and heritage activities.
