  • Nov - Mar

Overview

The Peninsula offers dramatic scenery and the greatest variety of wildlife in Antarctica. These adventurous voyages offer an unequalled introduction to the wildlife and stunning scenery of the great White Continent. Departing and finishing in the port of Ushuaia, Argentina, they include the most sought after sights of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, the most easily accessible part of Antarctica.

Highlights

  • Marvel at the antics of gentoo, chinstrap and Adelie penguins
  • Encounter a wealth of other wildlife including seals, seabirds and whales
  • Enjoy shore landings and Zodiac cruises past glistening icebergs
  • Cross the fabled Drake Passage en route from Ushuaia, Argentina
  • Choose from a range of adventure options (depending on departure)

Frequent departure dates throughout the season and a wide choice of vessels make these the most flexible Antarctic voyages. First time visitors need look no further for a full and rewarding experience of the Great White Continent.

During the austral summer, large areas of the Peninsula are ice-free making exploration possible and affording truly amazing photographic opportunities from curious penguins, seals hauled out on ice floes and vivid ice sculptures. With routes dictated by sea, ice and weather conditions, no two voyages are the same adding a real sense of adventure to an already outstanding holiday.

Offering the classic Antarctic experience, these voyages are both affordable and well-paced making them the most popular itineraries especially for first-time Polar travellers.

Two words: amazing - unbelievable! Four more words: want to go back!

Yvonne Tommis, Classic Antarctica

I had a fantastic time - it exceeded expectations and I can well understand why people are Antarctic addicts

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Ushuaia, Argentina
This expedition is perfect for first-time polar travellers and those with limited time. Overnight at a hotel in Ushuaia.
Day 2: Embarkation Day
After embarkation in the late afternoon, you will sail down the Beagle Channel. Keep watch on deck for seabirds, penguins and rainbows.
Days 3-4: Crossing the Drake Passage
Prepare for rough water, but do not be disappointed if your crossing is smooth sailing. The Drake is always changing and provides excellent opportunities for spotting seabirds, including many species of albatross and petrels.
Days 5-9: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
Explore the highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula - many factors play a role in shaping the expedition's progress, including sea, ice and weather conditions - but the plan is to leave the ship to explore in a range of activity levels at least twice a day.

Perhaps you'll feel salt spray on your face as the Zodiac weaves in and around grounded icebergs in Pleneau Bay. You could scramble to the top of a craggy hill for an unforgettable view of an icy chasm near Port Lockroy. You could sit quietly on a pebbled beach and wait for a curious penguin chick to approach or plunge into the frigid Antarctic waters.

Over the course of the austral spring and summer, the sun lingers longer and longer, melting snow and ice. Wildlife abounds: chicks hatch and fledge, and pods of whales breach in a deep bay where a calving iceberg has churned up krill, the local delicacy.

The natural cycle of life ensures that every expedition is different. And that every expedition is full of surprises! In Antarctica, silence is so complete that interruptions become indelible memories: noisy penguins squabbling over prized pebbles, the boom and crack of a calving glacier near Petermann Island. As you sail from island to shore to bay during four days around the Peninsula, the Expedition Team provides opportunities for contemplation, to test your endurance and engage your curiosity.
Days 10-11: Drake Passage
Activities during the return voyage depend on the conditions of the Drake. A smooth crossing is a busy crossing, with lectures and films to enjoy.
Day 12: Ushuaia
You will be transferred to the airport from the ship when you disembark in Ushuaia.
Notes
  • Shorter itineraries spend less time exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and longer itineraries spend more time here. Some options do NOT include the South Shetlands or the pre-voyage night accommodation in Ushuaia - see prices page or ask our team for full details.
  • All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!

Other Information

Scott’s final Antarctic expedition exhibition

Take a glimpse into history as two polar ships are transformed into exclusive floating galleries, with photographs from Scott’s final Antarctic expedition to be exhibited at sea for the first time.

Until March 2018 guests on board the Akademik Sergey Vavilov and Akademik Ioffe can view limited edition platinum prints of the iconic photographs taken by Herbert Ponting during Captain Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13.

The photographs are one of the most famous, beautiful and compelling visual records in the history of exploration. Ponting documented all facets of Scott’s expedition, including photographs of the men, their ship (the Terra Nova), daily life in their hut at Cape Evans, scientific research, Antarctic wildlife and the frozen landscapes of Ross Island.

Handmade from Ponting’s original glass plate negatives, now owned and conserved by the Scott Polar Research Institute, the prints were produced using the platinum printing process, a photographic technique first introduced in the19th century.

Passengers will have the opportunity to buy the limited edition prints during their voyage, with half of the proceeds going to the Scott Polar Research Institute to contribute to its environmental research and heritage activities.
