Overview

Experience the abundant wildlife and dramatic landscapes of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia as well as the Antarctic Peninsula on this superb Polar voyage. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, South Georgia has a huge range of wildlife in its bays, harbours and fjords including vast colonies of king penguins.

These extraordinary voyages take place during the height of the Austral summer and combine the magic of the Peninsula with the remote and rugged sub-Antarctic islands.

Highlights

  • enjoy penguin encounters including king, macaroni, gentoo, chinstrap and Adelie
  • marvel at the epic landscapes and history of South Georgia
  • explore privately-owned outer islands of the Falklands
  • cruise past breathtaking icebergs and sweeping glaciers on the Peninsula
  • choose from a range of Adventure Options (depending on departure)

Enjoy breathtaking scenery comprising icy waterways, sweeping glaciers, icebergs and rugged mountains. In the historic Falklands explore some of the privately owned outer islands that are home to great concentrations of seals and penguins while South Georgia offers a natural wonderland of awe-inspiring grandeur.

South Georgia also played a significant role in the story of Shackleton's epic Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. With their ship 'Endurance' claimed by the sea ice, the crew set out on an incredible journey in open lifeboats across the Southern Ocean, culminating in a hazardous traverse of South Georgia's mountain range. The settlement of Grytviken is appropriately the resting place of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Continue south, stopping at the South Shetland Islands and on to the Antarctic Peninsula cruising through the iceberg-filled waterways of the most accessible part of the Great White Continent.

Our trip to Antarctica was fabulous and I would recommend it to anyone.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Ushuaia, Argentina
Due to the size of the continent, Antarctica's diversity is best appreciated on longer voyages, where greater distances can be covered. This extended expedition encompasses the wildlife paradise of South Georgia, the remote Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) as well as the extraordinary beauty of the Peninsula. Overnight at a hotel in Ushuaia.
Day 2: embarkation day
Afternoon embarkation in Ushuaia and sail along the Beagle Channel to start your Antarctic adventure.
Day 3: at sea
There are many activities to keep you engaged while you are at sea. You could learn to identify the seabirds that glide alongside the ship, or attend the illustrated presentations by the Expedition Team. They will prepare you for the shore landings and Zodiac cruising to come.
Days 4-5: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
En route, the shipboard education program introduces the flora and fauna that you will encounter. Properly prepared, Zodiacs zip you from ship to shore to hike where Kelp Geese graze and Magellanic Penguins guard their burrows. You'll comb beaches and socialize with local residents.
Days 6-7: at sea
Sailing south you will enter Antarctic waters by crossing the Antarctic convergence, an invisible ring around the globe where the cold Southern Ocean meets the warmer waters of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Days 8-11: South Georgia
After crossing the Southern Ocean, a series of landings are planned around South Georgia, taking in King Penguin rookeries, abandoned whaling stations and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton. There are also plenty of opportunities for hiking.
Days 12-13: at sea
Your journey continues with the voyage south to the Antarctic Peninsula.
Days 14-17: South Shetland Islands & Antarctic Peninsula
Deception Island, Lemaire Channel, Neko Harbour, and Paradise Harbour these are the names that conjure iconic images of the Antarctic Peninsula, where you will encounter towering, glacier-capped mountains rising from a brilliant blue sea, dotted with ice floes. You will visit penguin colonies, listen for calving glaciers, visit historic sites and research stations.
Days 18-19: Drake Passage to Ushuaia
The Drake Passage crossing is a fitting end to your visit to Antarctica - there may be a final chance to see a variety of seabirds on this final stretch of your journey.
Day 20: Ushuaia
You will be transferred to the airport from the ship when you disembark in Ushuaia.
Notes
  • The 18 and 19 day itineraries spend less days exploring South Georgia. The 21 day itinerary on the MS Expedition spends an additional day at the Antarctic Peninsula.
  • All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!

Scott Expedition Photos

Take a glimpse into history as two polar ships are transformed into exclusive floating galleries, with photographs from Scott’s final Antarctic expedition to be exhibited at sea for the first time.

Until March 2018 guests on board the Akademik Sergey Vavilov and Akademik Ioffe can view limited edition platinum prints of the iconic photographs taken by Herbert Ponting during Captain Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13.

The photographs are one of the most famous, beautiful and compelling visual records in the history of exploration. Ponting documented all facets of Scott’s expedition, including photographs of the men, their ship (the Terra Nova), daily life in their hut at Cape Evans, scientific research, Antarctic wildlife and the frozen landscapes of Ross Island.

Handmade from Ponting’s original glass plate negatives, now owned and conserved by the Scott Polar Research Institute, the prints were produced using the platinum printing process, a photographic technique first introduced in the 19th century.

Passengers will have the opportunity to buy the limited edition prints during their voyage, with half of the proceeds going to the Scott Polar Research Institute to contribute to its environmental research and heritage activities.
