Itinerary & Accommodation
- Day 1: embarkation, Longyearbyen
- The northern frontier town of Longyearbyen is waiting to be explored before embarkation this afternoon.
- Days 2-8: Spitsbergen
Over the next few days your Expedition team will take advantage of local ice and weather conditions to explore the highlights of Spitsbergen's west coast, focusing on a search for wildlife. Popular attractions include the following:
14th of July Glacier: enjoy a Zodiac cruise along the face of this glacier, and search for Arctic foxes, purple sandpipers, common eiders, barnacle geese, Arctic terns and more among the nearby cliffs. Nearby tundra fields boast a shock of colour with abundant wildflowers.
Alkhornet: the towering rock face of Alkhornet reverberates with the call of thousands of seabirds that build nests on craggy outcroppings. Arctic foxes may be patrolling the area, hunting for chicks that fall from a nest. Svalbard reindeer, unique to the islands, could be grazing nearby.
Smeerenburg: translated as ‘Blubber Town’ - was a prolific whaling centre during the 17th and 18th centuries, and relics from these days can still be explored today.
- Day 9: disembarkation, Longyearbyen
- Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. From here you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
The 8-day itineraries aboard the M/S Expedition are a slightly shorter variations on the above, spending 1 day less exploring Spitsbergen.
All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!
