Overview

The great fjord system of East Greenland’s Scoresby Sund extends 350 kilometres inland and boasts truly spectacular scenery. This is the world's longest and widest fjord and this sailing holiday offers the perfect way to explore the landscape and truly experience the tranquil beauty of Greenland.

This fabulous itinerary provides the chance to experience the beautiful and remote Arctic aboard the traditional schooners 'Opal', 'Hildur' and the 'S/V Rembrandt van Rijn', or the sailboat 'Donna Wood'. These elegant two and three masted wooden vessels allow for a more intimate exploration of the spectacular Greenland coast, with a maximum of just 10 passengers (plus crew) on the Hildur, 12 passengers (plus crew) on the Opal, and Donna Wood and 33 passengers (plus crew) on the S/S Rembrandt van Rijn, travelling under billowing sails for a true sense of polar adventure.

If you would prefer to travel in a little more comfort and have a bit more space to move around, there are also alternative itineraries on board the expedition ships 'M/V Plancius' and 'Sea Spirit'.

Highlights

  • cruise the calm waters of Scoresby Sund and explore the fjord system
  • marvel at spectacular gorges with sheer cliffs plummeting to depths of more than 3000 metres
  • visit the tiny village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the most northerly settlement on Greenland’s east coast, home to just 500 inhabitants - a day here will provide a real insight into the Arctic way of life

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Keflavik - Constable Point - Ittoqqortoormiit
Depart Keflavik for Constable Point, a small airfield on the west side of Hurry Fjord in Jameson Land. Embark your vessel and sail towards the village of Ittoqqortoormiit where the evening is spent with locals in perhaps the most isolated village of the world. Ittoqqortoormiit was founded in the 1920s by people from Ammassalik. It is the most northerly settlement on the east coast of Greenland. The 500 inhabitants make their living mostly by subsistence hunting of seals, narwhal, muskoxen and polar bear. The quaint little houses dot the rocky slopes of south Liverpool Land with magnificent views of Kap Brewster and the Volquart Boons Coast to the south.
Day 2: Ittoqqortoormiit - Hekla Havn
Sail west between magnificent icebergs that drift down the Hall Basin after calving from the glaciers originating in the Inland Ice. Anchor at Hekla Havn, on Denmark Ø, the site of an old Inuit settlement and wintering camp of the first scientific expedition to Scoresby Sound over a hundred years ago. Enjoy a short evening walk to explore Hekla Havn and the surrounding area.
Day 3: Hekla Havn - Harefjord
Cruise through the narrow Føhnfjord with the majestic basalt mountains of Gåseland on the port side and 2000 metres high sheer granite cliffs of Milne Land on the Starboard side. Explore Red Island before continuing north through Rødefjord which is often filled with both larger icebergs and ice crust from icebergs that are breaking up. Arrive in Harefjord for a 2-night anchorage.
Day 4: Harefjord
Spend a whole day ashore in Harefjord scouting for muskoxen, snow hares, grouse, geese and other wildlife, which normally graze on the south facing slopes. You can choose to join an easy to moderate hike (approx 6-7 hours) with a lunch break at the top of a ridge offering breath-taking views over Harefjord where the glacier tongues descend into the sea. Those who prefer less exercise can stroll at the coast or stay on board enjoying the view. In the evening the crew will make a bonfire and prepare BBQ at the rocky beach.
Day 5: Harefjord - Jyttes Havn
Continue sailing, now eastwards through the awesome Øfjord where towering mountain peaks and granite cliffs stretch 200 metres up from the sea. Overnight anchorage at Jyttes Havn.
Day 6: Jyttes Havn
The day is spent hiking in and around Jyttes Havn in Bear Islands - one of the most picturesque anchorages in Scoresby Sound. There is a choice of a longer or shorter hike in the Bear Islands, or on the northernmost tip of Milneland, a short zodiac ride away. Jyttes Havn is the place to try your skills at sea swimming at 71°N and temperatures can be as surprising as 13°C in the summertime. In the evening we offer a nice meal on board and then a cosy bonfire on the beach with story telling or singing.
Day 7: Jyttes Havn - Constable Point
Sail the channel between the Bear Islands and Milne land with a breathtaking view of the spectacular archipelago. Witness some of the largest and the most fascinating icebergs of the journey. When you wake up the next morning, the boat will be anchored at the at the airstrip in Constable Point.
Day 8: Constable Point - Keflavik
After a final breakfast on board, disembark the vessel and board the aircraft in Constable Point for your flight back to Keflavik.
