Overview

This excellent expedition is an ideal introduction to Spitsbergen, offering frequent shore landings and Zodiac excursions to maximise wildlife viewing opportunities. Polar bears and belugas may be among your wildlife highlights during this voyage.

This voyage focuses predominantly on Spitsbergen's west coast, spending less time at sea to enable more time on land and in the zodiacs.

Highlights

  • wildlife viewing from shore landings and Zodiacs
  • breathtaking Arctic scenery
  • opportunity to go sea kayaking (selected departures only)

Easily accessible and yet offering a true sense of remoteness, Spitsbergen is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago. Even with only a brief foray into the icy wilderness you may see polar bears, reindeer, walrus and belugas, as well as a huge variety of seabirds including skua, Arctic terns and snow buntings.

For the more active there is a chance to enjoy sea-kayaking (additional cost, selected departures only, must be pre-booked) - a truly magical way to experience this unique environment, especially if you are lucky enough to paddle with beluga whales.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: embarkation, Longyearbyen
Board your ship in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen's largest settlement.
Days 2-10: West Spitsbergen
Over the next few days your Expedition team will take advantage of local ice and weather conditions to explore the highlights of Spitsbergen's west coast. Popular attractions include the following:

14th of July Glacier: enjoy a Zodiac cruise along the face of this glacier, and search for Arctic foxes, purple sandpipers, common eiders, barnacle geese, Arctic terns and more among the nearby cliffs.

Bourbonhamna: the narrow sound near Bourbonhamna is a favoured route of majestic beluga whales.

Ny Alesund: the worldís most northerly settlement is now a research centre as well as a breeding ground for barnacle geese, pink-footed geese and Arctic tern.

Phippsoya: an archipelago within an archipelago, Seven Islands comprises the northernmost portion of Svalbard. They lie about 10 degrees from the North Pole and polar bears and walrus are commonly sighted around the island of Phippsoya.

Smeerenburg: explore Svalbard's whaling past and visit an authentic blubber oven, or perhaps join an optional snowshoeing adventure for a more in-depth exploration.
Day 11: disembarkation, Longyearbyen
Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen.
Notes

The voyage aboard the Sea Spirit on 28 June 2017 will include an overnight in a Longyearbyen hotel on day one, with embarkation on day two.

The 10 day voyages aboard the M/V Ortelius on 26 June 2018, the S/V Rembrandt van Rijn on 01 June 2018 and on the S/V Nooderlicht on 30 March 2018, will spend one less day exploring the Spitsbergen coast.
