Overview

Three Arctic Islands in one memorable voyage! Covering many miles of extraordinary coastline, encounter wildlife such as narwhal, arctic fox, polar bear and musk oxen as you visit Spitsbergen, Greenland and Iceland.

This is the Arctic of Viking lore and legend - a world of icy fjords, fiery volcanoes and glittering, ice-bound seas. Commencing in Spitsbergen and ending in Iceland, this adventurous voyage focuses on the rugged and seldom visited northeast coast of Greenland.

Highlights

  • Encounter the majestic ice bear and colossal walrus
  • Observe seabirds by the thousands in towering cliff-side rookeries
  • Take in breathtaking flower-dotted tundra plains
  • Visit the largest fjord in the world
  • Witness glaciers, gigantic icebergs and rugged mountains
  • See remnants of Inuit settlements

Towards the end of the summer, as the surrounding pack ice breaks up, access to the most remote and very beautiful parts of East Greenland becomes possible. Even in today's age of receding last frontiers, this region sees few visitors. Though traces of former Inuit settlements are widespread, today just a handful of small hunting and fishing communities are found along the entire coast. In a place where man's impact has been so minimal, nature lies virtually undisturbed.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Embarkation Longyearbyen
At approx. 2,075 inhabitants, Longyearbyen is the largest community in the Svalbard Islands. Embarkation is in the early afternoon.
Days 2-5: Exploring Spitsbergen
Spitsbergen is the largest of the Svalbard Islands, an Arctic archipelago that is part of Norway. Anticipate visits to the 14th of July Glacier, the settlement of Ny Alesund and Monaco Glacier. Sightings of Arctic Terns, Arctic Skuas, Long-tailed Ducks, Kittiwakes and Glaucous Gulls are possible, as well as walrus and polar bears.
Days 6-7: Greenland Sea
While sailing the historic Greenland Sea you'll learn about the Arctic's wildlife and history. On deck you'll learn to identify seabirds on the wing. Share photos, sip an icy cocktail in the bar, watch a movie - there are many things to do at sea.
Days 8-12: Eastern Greenland and Scoresbysund
During your tour of Greenland's remote eastern coast, you'll enjoy sea-level Zodiac cruises and shore visits to several locations. Sail the ice edge searching for walrus and polar bear. Visit the remains of ancient Thule settlements, and keep an eye out for grazing musk oxen, because 40% of the world's population of this fascinating mammal lives on the east coast of Greenland. Finally, sail through spectacular Scoresbysund, birthplace of many icebergs, and - some say - the most beautiful fjord system in the world.
Day 13: At sea in the Denmark Strait
Sail through the Denmark Strait en route back to Iceland. Your onboard Expedition Team keeps you informed and entertained with presentations about the area’s wildlife.
Day 14: Disembark Akureyri, fly to Reykjavik
The expedition disembarks in Akureyri from where you will take a flight to Iceland's bustling capital city, Reykjavik. We recommend spending a few additional days exploring the city and its surroundings.
