Itinerary & Accommodation

Collect your rental vehicle today. Drive to the summit of Mt Wellington for amazing views, enjoy a scenic flight and visit to the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) (optional, at extra cost). Entry is included to the wonderful Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, the state's top sanctuary where all rescued animals and birds are rehabilitated and released. Also included is a small group tour seeing the beind the scenes of the feeding process. - Day 3: Tarraleah (126 km)
You can make the drive to Strahan in a day but it is at least four to five hours on a very winding route and there are many worthwhile stops. - Days 4-5: Strahan (175 km)
Enjoy some breathtaking scenery before arriving in Strahan. This is the gateway to Tasmania's stunning western wilderness and the last major tract of temperate rainforest left on our planet. The Bonnet Island penguin tour will take you to the huge little penguin colony and a cruise on the mysterious Gordon River to the harshest of all Australia's penal colonies, Sarah Island (tours included).
Overnights: Ormiston House (Breakfast included)
- Days 6-7: The Road to Nowhere - Strahan to Stanley (252 km)
Adventure beckons as you travel on the road few visitors take, driving the Western Explorer along the coast to the fishing village of Stanley. Your journey will take you through the remote Arthur-Pieman conservation area where you take the Fatman Barge across the Pieman River – here you are not likely to see another soul!
Much of the road here is unsealed, though recently upgraded. An alternate route is the "tourist trail" from Strahan, skirting Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Overnights: Stanley Seaview Inn (Breakfast provisions included)
- Days 8-9: Tasmanian devils, platypus and Mountain Valley
Today you are bound for the only place in Tasmania where you may see Tasmanian Devils in the wild. Mountain Valley Eco Retreats are set miles from anywhere in a stunning valley. Here you can see endemic birds and wildlife in abundance.
Overnights: Mountain Valley Eco Retreats (Breakfast, Dinner & Wildlife tours included)
- Day 10: Launceston
- Drive back to Launceston and return your rental car before continuing for your departing flight or, if you have more time, head for Tassie's mild and sunny East Coast. For those who still love the path less travelled, why not stop on Flinders Island on your way back to Melbourne?
