Introduction

The coastal village of Klemtu is home to the 12 room Spirit Bear Lodge, which is owned by the Kitasoo/Xai'xais First Nations communities and is built in the style of the West Coast's First Nations heritage.

A stay at the lodge offers the chance to enjoy authentic wildlife viewing tours with local Kitasoo guides and the star attraction is the Spirit Bear, a subspecies of the black bear whose white colour is thought to be caused by a recessive gene. The Kitasoo Xai'xais people, who have lived with these bears for thousands of years, believe that "one in every ten black bears was made white to remind the people of a time when glaciers covered this land, and how the people should be thankful of the lush and bountiful land of today."

Other wildlife that may be seen during a stay at Spirit Bear Lodge include grizzly and black bears, wolves, orcas, dolphins and sea-lions. Combined with an exploration of ancestral lands and ancient village sites, a stay Spirit Bear Lodge offers a truly unique interpretation of the Great Bear Rainforest and all its inhabitants.
