Located in the heart of the wilderness, this remote eco-lodge is accessed by a 30-minute floatplane or ski-plane flight from Yellowknife. Perched on the shores of Blachford Lake, backed by boreal forest, the lodge is in a prime location right beneath the auroral oval and far from artificial light, making it one of Canada’s best spots for northern lights viewing.
Other activities on offer at the lodge include ice fishing, tobogganing, skating and snowshoeing. During the summer months the lake offers excellent fishing, kayaking and swimming, whilst hiking and biking trails abound throughout the surrounding forest.
Blachford Lake Lodge comprises of a main building and five rustic log cabins. The main lodge is built from local spruce and has been carefully designed with solar panels, an overhanging roof and a number of south-facing windows, to ensure shade in the summer and warmth through the winter.
There are five large guest rooms on the upper floor of the main lodge, with access to shared shower and washrooms. The lodge rooms feature huge windows with expansive views, ideal for aurora viewing from the comfort of your bed! There are also two aurora viewing decks upstairs. The ground floor serves as the lounge, with bar, dining room and library, and additional showers and washrooms which are shared with cabin guests. Unusually for such a remote facility, the lodge’s washrooms boast hot running water and the eco-friendly composting toilets have been convincingly disguised as standard toilets.
The log cabins are separated for maximum privacy, each with lake views, an outside camp fire pit and a basic outdoor toilet situated close by. Shower facilities are at the main lodge, a 5 minute walk away. Each cabin contains a minimum of 4 beds and features electric lighting and power, and a woodstove for heating.
