About Chile
The origin of the name Chile is much disputed, with theories linking it to historic Inca valleys, a Mapuche translation meaning ‘where the land ends’ and even the warble made by a native bird. Whatever the truth, the name became popularised by the Spanish conquistadors who arrived from Peru in the early 16th century.
Natural barriers to the outside world, including deserts, mountains and oceans, have resulted in a fairly isolated existence for much of Chile’s history. This has created a number of distinctive pristine environments which can not be seen in such close proximity anywhere else on earth. In one trip you can visit the world’s driest (non-polar) desert, gaze at the majesty of the universe from one of several scientific observatories, bathe in volcanic geothermal waters, relax on a sun drenched beach, sample some of South America’s best wine, sail through iceberg dotted fjords, trek among imposing granite peaks, marvel at wildlife from pumas to penguins and even tag on a flight to Easter Island – a magnificent remote isle, sprinkled with huge stone sculptures known as Moai, which stand as peculiar clues to a mysterious past.
Chile has in recent years emerged as one of the continent’s most stable and prosperous nations and is now widely perceived to be one of the safest and fastest growing tourist destinations in Latin America. An expanding network of internal and international flights is making getting into and around Chile easier than ever before.
