Finnish Lapland holidays
Rafael Perez / Visit Finland
Finnish Lapland is a magical destination all year round, whether you're hunting the aurora or basking in the Midnight Sun. Perfect for a short break or outdoors adventure in winter or summer, Finnish Lapland's appeal lies in the wilderness that's waiting to be explored, and the chance to meet and learn about indigenous Sami culture.
Finnish Lapland covers an area of almost 100,000sq.km and is found almost entirely within the Arctic Circle. Its rolling hills and sweeping plains are blanketed by coniferous forests, the uplands are peppered with birch forests, and Finland's third largest lake – Lake Inari – is a beautiful place to explore on a boat trip and an important area for the Sami people.
Nearby, the Sami Siida Museum in Inari itself is regarded as one of the best places in the world to find out more about the history and culture of the region's indigenous people. Meanwhile Lemmenjoki National Park has an abundance of rivers, forests and fells, and is crisscrossed with well marked trails. After days spent exploring make sure you indulge in the quintessentially Finnish pastime, relaxing in a sauna.
In winter, the spectacular snowscape sparkles by the light of the stars and the northern lights during the kaamos (polar night). By contrast, the seemingly endless summer days under the midnight sun are perfect for watching wildlife and exploring the great outdoors, before the autumn colours – known as the ruska – set the countryside a-flame.
Top Winter Resorts in Finnish Lapland
On the shores of Lake Inari, Nellim Wilderness Resort offers adventure breaks amidst stunning scenery combining winter activities, traditional cuisine and the chance to see the northern lights.
To the east in Urho Kekkonen National Park lies Muotka Lodge. Deep within taiga forest, the picturesque surroundings are well suited to a range of activities including reindeer sledging, snowmobiling and husky sledding.
Iso-Syote is perched high up in Syote National Park, giving spectacular views and great skies for nothern lights viewing. This area often gets large snowfall, so it's a true fairytale winter wonderland and great for winter activities. Snuggle up by the fire in your traditional log cabin, or stay in one of the brand new Aurora View suites. There's plenty of opportunity to enjoy a sauna here, or visit the Arctic Spa. The perfect place for a romantic winter break.
Santa Claus Village & Rovaniemi
A short break in Rovaniemi combines urban style with a winter wonderland experience including offering easy access to Santa's Village and Santa's Park. With the chance to stay in a log cabin, take part in thrilling winter activities and watch out for the aurora, this is an ideal family getaway.
