If you're dreaming of a white Christmas then Helsinki can deliver the perfect mix for an enchanting winter break. The snow usually arrives in time for Christmas in the Finnish capital, draping the city in white and creating a festive atmosphere with sparkling lights on the main streets and the aroma of mulled wine in the air while you peruse the handicraft stalls in the senate square.
The temperature may dip below minus 10 Celsius, but the mood around the city is one of warm hospitality, with shops and restaurants radiating a welcoming glow. Combine this with carol recitals emanating from churches, shop window decorations in competition with each other, the smell of glögi, a traditional Christmas drink made from spiced wine with a sprinkling of almonds and raisins and sometimes a dash of vodka and you’d think Helsinki is the home of Christmas celebrations.
An event not to be missed during the festive season is Helsinki's Christmas market, the oldest and largest event of its kind in the capital. Taking place in the Senate Square from 3-22 December and surrounded by imposing neo-classical buildings it’s one of the best European Christmas Markets attracting thousands of visitors each year. With over 120 stalls selling handicrafts, decorations, unique gifts, good local food, hot drinks and, of course the Christmas spirit the main focus of the market it’s the perfect place to get in the mood for festive celebrations.
If you can drag yourself away from the shops Helsinki also has many other attractions to fill your time. The historic centre houses the Helsinki City museum in the Tori Quarter, Helsinki Cathedral, Presidential Palace and Sederholm House, the oldest stone building in the city centre dating back to 1757. Other attractions include Temppeliaukio Church, otherwise known as the Rock Church as it’s quarried out of the natural bed-rock, a popular choice for visitors. There are Art Museums, the Natural History Museum and the Olympic Stadium to name just a few.
The best way to get from one attraction to the next is by tram, allowing visitors the chance to enjoy scenic routes through the city or perhaps join a sightseeing tour by bus with a hop-on hop-off service available. And if you still have enough energy left the Ice Park in the Railway Station square is a popular attraction with an ice rink and café a great venue to chill out.
