This 10-night fly drive around Iceland's Road 1 has been designed to provide the most comprehensive introduction to the country as possible in the time allowed. Combining the freedom of self-drive with the convenience of pre-booked accommodation you'll be able to take in many of the country's well-known sights including the Golden Circle, Lake Myvatn and the south coast, as well as have the chance to head off the beaten track in search of some of Iceland's hidden gems.

Venture into the Highlands

For those with a 4WD this itinerary offers the chance to travel through Iceland's uninhabited interior, following the Kjolur route from north to south. This famed track runs between the icecaps of Langjokull and Hofsjokull into a very different world of river crossings, mountain passes and hot springs.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Keflavik - Grindavik
Arrive at Keflavik Airport, collect your rental vehicle and drive through the lavascapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula and time permitting, visit the iconic Blue Lagoon (optional, payable locally). Overnight stay at the nearby Northern Light Inn.
Day 2: Grindavik - Hveragerdi
After breakfast head east and drive the Golden Circle route. Marvel at the spectacular waterfall Gullfoss; watch Strokkur erupt at Geysir and explore the site of the ancient Viking parliament site at Thingvellir. Continue to Hveragerdi and stay overnight at either Hotel Eldhestar, Litli Geysir or Frost & Fire.
Day 3: Hveragerdi - Saudarkrokur
Head north choosing to follow Road 1 or, for those with a 4WD, journey along the ancient Kjolur Route between the glaciers Langjokull and Hofsjokull. Either route leads to the delightful village of Saudarkrokur, on the shores of the Skagafjordur Bay, one of Iceland’s most important horse breeding areas. Overnight at Hotel Tindastoll or Hotel Mikligardur.
Day 4: Saudarkrokur - Akureyri
Continuing east, arrive in Akureyri , Iceland's picturesque northern capital. Enjoy a stroll around town, trace the shore of Iceland's longest fjord Eyjafjordur, or take an optional whale watching excursion (payable locally). Overnight at The Lamb Inn.
Day 5: Akureyri - Myvatn
Drive to Lake Myvatn via beautiful Godafoss and spend the day exploring this amazing area of volcanic wonders or head up to Husavik, a charming fishing village renowned for whale watching boat trips out into Skjalfandi bay. Back at Myvatn, enjoy a dip in the wonderful Nature Baths (optional, payable locally). Overnight at Hotel Laugar or Guesthouse Draflastadir.
Day 6: Myvatn - Egilsstadir
Drive away from Myvatn to the bubbling mud pools of Namaskard and detour north following the river Jokulsa to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. From here, continue east to Egilsstadir for a 2-night stay at Lake Hotel.
Day 7: exploring East Fjords
Spend a day exploring this lesser visited region of Iceland. Enjoy spectacular coast roads; explore tiny fishing villages and witness 128m-tall Hengifoss, the country's third highest waterfall.
Day 8: Egilsstadir - Vatnajokull
Allow plenty of time to admire the views on the drive south following the scenic coast road around the fjords. As the vast icecap Vatnajokull dominates the horizon inland, overnight near Jokulsarlon at Country Hotel Hali.
Day 9: Vatnajokull - Hella
Begin the day marvelling at the sights in Vatnajokull National Park. At Jokulsarlon, the incredible glacial lagoon, watch icebergs calved from glacier tongues drift out to open sea. Take an optional boat trip around the 'bergy bits' (payable locally) or simply marvel at the lagoon from the shore. Continue to Skaftafell taking a stroll through birch woodland to the striking waterfall Svartifoss, then drive westward across outburst plains to reach the South Shore. Enjoy scenic wonders along the south coast including waterfalls, black sand beaches and dramatic rock stacks. Overnight at Hotel Laekur in Hella with dinner included.
Day 10: Hella - Reykjavik
After breakfast spend more time exploring the south coast before following Road 1 to Reykjavik. Overnight at Hotel Klettur.
Day 11: depart Iceland
Enjoy a relaxed morning or take a second chance to visit to the Blue Lagoon (optional, payable locally). Continue to Keflavik Airport and drop off your rental vehicle.
