Swedish Lapland is home of the iconic Icehotel and one of the world’s best places to see the northern lights, Abisko National Park
Discover a diverse and breathtaking landscape, from a rugged, fjord-indented coastline to miles upon miles of peaceful plains.
Covering the northern areas of Sweden, Finland, Norway and part of Russia’s Kola Peninsula, Lapland has no definitive border, but sprawls across a vast and beautiful mosaic of mountains, fells, forests, lakes and even coastline. The region tingles with the prospect of truly extraordinary holidays - summer or winter.
Lapland is inhabited by the indigenous Sami people, which today number around 60,000. Such is the ever-changing light and patterns of nature in Lapland that the Sami recognise eight - not four - seasons in a year. The Sami calendar also revolves around reindeer. Although few Sami live by the old nomadic ways, reindeer herding is still deeply entwined in their culture. Experiencing the heritage and customs of the Sami is one of the major highlights of visiting Lapland.
During winter, the snow-cloaked forests and frozen lakes also provide the perfect setting for activities as diverse as husky sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, reindeer sledding, moose safaris, ice sculpting and snowshoeing. Lapland enjoys a prime position in the so-called auroral oval, making it one of the best places in the world to search for the northern lights. We not only offer dedicated northern lights holidays, but we also handpick properties renowned for their aurora potential.
When summer releases Lapland from its frozen grip, you can experience a rich landscape of fast-flowing rivers, sparkling lakes and aromatic pine forests; wildflowers bloom under the midnight sun, while endless hours of daylight can be filled with activities such as hiking, canoeing, wildlife watching or simply dawdling through breathtaking scenery on one of our summer self-drive holidays.
