The incredible Yllasjarvi area is often an overwhelming discovery, with deep snow burying the rolling fells and alpine forests with a blanket of perfect white. A stay at the Lainio Snow Village is an incredible way to explore the far north, with the snow village, built entirely of snow and ice, getting visitors in the proper mindset for a northern winter.
Open from 10 December until 6 April, around 30 ice rooms and suites are built each year at the Snow Hotel, skilfully carved to display different themes and atmosphere. Approximately 1.5 million kgs of snow and 300,000 kgs of crystal clear, natural ice are used for the construction.
The Snow Village covers an area of approximately 20,000 square metres with about 3,000 square metres of covered indoor spaces built as a combination of different snow and ice structures. The architectural design and the themes of interior decoration vary from year to year always offering a unique experience.
In the village, you can find an Ice Bar, in which you sip your cocktail from an ice glass, two restaurants, one set in a warm log cabin and one built of ice, as well as a unique art gallery set in a traditional Sami kota (teepee). Colourfully lit ice and snow sculptures dot the forests and an ice maze and snow slides will have children eager to head out into the cold.
Excursions available include snowmobile journeys, reindeer and husky safaris as well as cross country skiing and expeditions in search of the northern lights.

Igloo Rooms & Ice Suites
A night in the SnowHotel, surrounded by beautifully illuminated ice art and thick snow walls, is truly a night to remember. There are 15 standard igloo-shaped bedrooms plus 8 more elaborate ice suites. The standard igloo rooms are made of snow and decorated with a bedframe and tables made of ice. The ice suites are similar, the main difference is the amount of ice and snow art as well as lighting used in the suite and are individually decorated. Heated washroom facilities and sauna are located in an adjoining building which also has a TV lounge with tea and coffee making facilities. You sleep in high quality thermal sleeping bags ensuring a comfortable stay and are woken in the morning with hot berry juice. A buffet breakfast is served in the warm log restaurant. During your night here, your bags are stored in a luggage room.
This wonderful teepee, which sleeps two, has a cosy seating area with open plan living room/kitchenette. The master bedroom is on the mezzanine floor and has a very special feature – a skylight for keeping vigil on the aurora borealis. Alternatively, you may prefer sitting shoulder deep in the outside hot tub whilst watching the dancing lights overhead. This tepee is exceptional, built to a particularly high standard and as you can imagine, demand is high so book early!
Varying in size, the log cabins sleep from 2 to 5 people and are equipped with a sauna and facilities including a television, coffee maker, dishwasher, microwave and drying cabinet for wet clothes.
