Overview

Swedish Lapland has no shortage of spectacular scenery, but on this independent short break in Stora Sjofallet you'll discover a rich cultural heritage as well as incredible landscapes. The national park forms part of the Laponia World Heritage Site – a vast swathe of old-growth forest, glaciers, mountains and wetlands that has been home to the reindeer-herding Sami since prehistoric times.

Far from light pollution, Stora Sjofallet is a superb spot to track down the northern lights. Other winter highlights include frozen waterfalls, while activities range from snowshoeing and snowmobiling to spending a night or two on an amazing Sami glamping experience.

It is also possible to combine this with the famous Icehotel and Treehotel.

The Sami heartland of Laponia
Laponia World Heritage Site covers around 9,400 square kilometres of Swedish Lapland. The Sami have been herding their reindeer here for millennia, making it one of the best places in Lapland to experience their fascinating culture. Stora Sjofallet is one of four national parks in Laponia. Named after the ‘Great Waterfall’ – a series of cascades with a total drop of about 40m – it is home to abundant wildlife including moose, lynx, wolverine and brown bear.

Stora Sjofallet Mountain Lodge
Surrounded by lakes and mountains, Stora Sjofallet Mountain Lodge makes a wonderful base for exploring the national park. Refurbished in 2016, the hotel has an excellent restaurant specialising in tasty local dishes using wild game, fish, berries and herbs. Ask us about arranging a private dinner in the wilderness. A short walk from the mountain centre, a stunning new museum called Naturum Laponia reveals the region’s natural history and Sami culture, while optional activities, such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and northern lights watching, can be easily arranged.

Sapmi Nature Camp
For an unforgettable cultural experience, go glamping at Sapmi Nature Camp right on the edge of Laponia. The camp consists of five cosy lavvu tents, each one heated by a wood-burning stove. Experiencing Sami food, folklore and fieldcraft, you will be able to meet a local reindeer herdsman who will share their knowledge on all things Sami. Take a self-guided ski or snowshoe tour on pre-pared tracks in the Laponia World Heritage area.

We recommend a minimum of three days to explore Stora Sjofallet. The national park also combines well with the Icehotel, Abisko National Park and wilderness lodges in the Lulea area such as the Treehotel and Brandon Lodge. Stopovers in Stockholm are also possible.

Notes

The weather in Sweden can be unpredictable and therefore may cause substantial delays which can result in the need to re-arrange or extend your holiday itinerary. Whilst we and our contacts in Sweden will do everything possible to minimise any disruption, it is important that you check the details of your travel insurance and allow for some flexibility in your plans.

Icehotel - Optional Ice Room Experience
Sleeping in an Ice Room (or any room within the actual Icehotel) is a great experience and what most people come here to do. Please note that on your night in the Icehotel you will check out of your warm accommodation and check in at the 'cold reception' where you will store your belongings and have use of the facilities, including a sauna.

If you prefer to spend all your nights in heated accommodation this is also possible, subject to availability.

Alternatively, if you are unsure about an Ice Room but would still like to try it, you can book the standard arrangements and reserve an additional back-up warm room. This requires a supplement and is subject to availability. Please view our Icehotel accommodation and FAQs page for more details. Our travel specialists will also be happy to discuss any questions you may have about sleeping on ice.
