About Namibia

The name Namibia comes from the Nama word meaning 'vast place of nothingness', an appropriate name as Namibia is the second least densely populated country in the world, after Mongolia. This southern African nation boasts spectacular sand dunes, coastal wilderness, an abundance of wildlife and the world’s oldest desert.

A remarkable country, Namibia is unlike any other destination, in Africa or elsewhere. Namibia's scenery is impressive, and this is one of the country's main attractions. Two great deserts, ancient gorges, unspoilt coastline and expansive savannah form the most recognisable features of a country whose popular visitor sites include the stunning sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the geological phenomenon of Fish River Canyon, the captivating landscapes of Damaraland and the vast game reserve of Etosha National Park.

Namibia is home to extraordinary wildlife, including the Big Five, almost half the world’s population of black rhino, approximately 40% of the world’s cheetahs and a wealth of marine life. Namibia is also one of only two countries in the world where you can find desert adapted elephants.

It is a popular fly-drive destination; the roads are in good condition, you drive on the left-hand side and you will encounter few other cars. Self driving around Namibia is a fantastic way to see the country independently, allowing the freedom to explore at your own pace, stopping when you want, to enjoy the extraordinary variety of landscapes and wildlife that you encounter along the way.
