Overview

Travel far off the beaten track on a private safari to the remote northwestern reaches of Kaokoland, where the indigenous Himba people still follow a traditional way of life.

Highlights

  • Meet local Himba and Herero people and learn more about their culture and traditions
  • Journey to Namibia’s northern border at the mighty Kunene River
  • Travel with a private guide to get the most out of your Namibian experience
  • Set up camp in the midst of spectacular wilderness areas

Travelling from Damaraland, this itinerary explores Namibia’s far northwest with a focus on cultural encounters with the nomadic tribes of Kaokoland. Visit remote villages and meet herdsmen along the road as you head far off the beaten track. Your private guide will share stories of the local people’s way of life and explain their traditions and rituals.

Along the way you may also spot a variety of wildlife, mainly plains game but also desert adapted elephants and rhino if you are lucky.

Another highlight of this safari is the rare opportunity to reach Namibia’s northern border with Angola, marked by the Kunene River. Largely inaccessible, few visitors travel to this area. Your journey will be rewarded with a night at the stunning Epupa Falls, a welcome sight after your desert adventures.

Camping in the wilderness offers the chance to truly immerse yourself in the spectacular landscapes of Kaokoland. Surrounded by a vast and untouched terrain, here you are a privileged guest in the home of the Himba people.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Palmwag area - Hoarusib River Valley
Depart early this morning on your long journey north, travelling past native Herero villages en route to Kaoko Otavi, an old Dorsland trek settlement located just southwest of Opuwo. Here you will enjoy your first encounters with the nomadic Himba tribe. After a brief stop, continue west via several small Himba settlements and villages to the picturesque Hoarusib River Valley, an area often frequented by desert adapted wildlife. Your overnight camp will be set up near the dry riverbed.
Day 2: Hoarusib River Valley - Northwestern Kaokoland
Follow the ancient riverbed north into the heart of Kaokoland, with a good chance of passing local Himba herdsmen and their families along the way. The trail leads over striking mountain ranges and densely vegetated riverbeds as it winds its way towards the Kunene River. Another night of wild camping offers the chance to immerse yourself in the natural surrounds of this untouched corner of Namibia.
Day 3: Northwestern Kaokoland - Kunene River
Today’s destination is the breathtaking Epupa Falls on the mighty Kunene River, which forms the border between Namibia and Angola. Take a hike along the river to view the impressive waterfalls, before diving into one of the upper pools for a refreshing swim. Camp will be set up on the banks of the Kunene River.
Day 4: Kunene River - Otjomatemba
After breakfast your safari heads back south into central Kaokoland, travelling via the village of Okangwati; a major trading station of the Himba and Herero people of this area. Next, you will continue further south to the Otjomatemba area, a tranquil and very scenic part of southern Kaokoland.
Day 5: Otjomatemba to Palmwag area
Today you continue towards Sesfontein with a short visit to the colonial German fort of the same name. Journey to the Ongongo Waterfall for a picnic lunch, before arriving back in the Palmwag area late afternoon.
