Mosquitoes

One of the first questions people ask when travelling to Lapland during the summer months is whether there are mosquitoes and how to cope with them.

Firstly, it is worth bearing in mind that although they can be irritating, they do not carry diseases. However, it is worth taking some simple precautions against them. A good repellant is essential and you may opt to purchase that locally, knowing it is meant for the local conditions. Repellants containing DEET tend to be more effective, but be careful and apply it only to your skin. It can harm synthetic materials (like synthetic clothing).

Insects tend to be more attracted to the sweat and odours, so having regular showers helps and use long trousers and long-sleeved shirts, made from tightly woven fabrics. A mosquito head net is a must, it is light to carry and gives a lot of relief. Some research shows that mosquitoes are attracted to blue and also to contrasts of light and dark clothing, so neutral colours may work best.

The mosquito season is normally from mid-June to mid-August, but very much depends on your location and the weather. You may find that at times they disappear completely, but always be prepared, especially in the evenings, close to lakes and in still weather.
